Diamonds are Forever

During the holiday season, insurance may not be top of your to-do list. Nevertheless, if you were lucky enough to have Santa leave you something sparkly under the tree, bear in mind that it might need to be added to your home insurance. NY residents should not assume that coverage is automatic, particularly when a gift exceeds a certain price limit.

Gemstones such as diamonds would be a case in point because they are extremely expensive. Their recognition as a valuable gemstone is said to have originated in ancient India around 3,000 years ago.

There is also evidence to suggest that diamonds were recognized for their ability to cut and polish other material by the ancient Chinese, who appear to have used diamonds to polish stone-age objects such as hand-axes and surviving examples of finely polished jade, over 4,000 years ago.

Whether Santa is generous enough to leave you diamonds or not, there are many other valuable items you might have been lucky enough to find under the tree on Christmas Day. A wide range of electronic goods, such as TVs, might require specific coverage and once the dust has settled, it is worth checking your home insurance. NY is generally a safe place to live considering the population, but it’s always worth a simple phone call to make sure your coverage is sufficient, just in case.
